Chemical Measurements

By the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, Regulation on Health and Safety Measures in Chemical Substances has been published in 2013. The purpose of this regulation is to protect the health of the employees and to establish the conditions for creating a safe working environment, which are the hazards that may arise or are likely to arise due to the effects of the chemicals used or processed in the working environment. This regulation covers all enterprises covered by occupational health and safety and where various chemicals are processed and used.

In accordance with the principles of the method in question, enterprises are required to take all necessary measures to prevent employees who are in a position to work with chemicals, to prevent their exposure to these substances, to reduce their effects and to protect their health and safety. In order to fulfill these obligations, enterprises are required to carry out a risk assessment in accordance with the Principles of Occupational Health and Safety Risk Assessment published in 2012. In this way, it is determined whether there is any hazardous chemical substance in the working environment and if there is any hazardous chemical material, it is determined whether they have a negative effect on the health and safety of the employees.

In the annex of this regulation, Occupational Exposure Limit Values Table is given. This table shows the names of the various chemical substances and the upper limit values of exposure, which should not be exceeded within a period of eight minutes and a period of 15 if not given. In addition, the prohibition of the use of chemical substances that are prohibited to be used in regulation annexes are also counted.

There is a need for measurement, analysis and evaluation studies to be carried out by independent and impartial test and inspection organizations in order to understand that all these limits are related to the activities of enterprises.

What is the scope of chemical measurements?

Chemical measurements to be made must be complied with the principles of the Regulation on Health and Safety Measures in Work with the Chemical Materials mentioned above as well as the provisions of the Health and Safety Conditions Regulation on the Use of Work Equipment by the Ministry. In accordance with this regulation, the employees must use the environment and equipment to be tested and inspected at regular intervals and in accordance with certain methods.

There are many national and international standards to be used in these measurements. There are several standards that are taken into account when performing chemical measurements:

  • Lead analysis
    • TS ISO 8518 Workplace air - Determination of lead and lead compounds in grain - Flame or electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometric method
  • Formaldehyde Analysis
    • TS ISO 16000-3 Indoor air - Determination of formaldehyde and other carbonyl compounds - Method of active sampling
    • NIOSH 3500 Formaldehyde by vis
    • MDHS 78 Formaldehyde in air
  • Volatile organic compounds
    • Internal environment and workplace air - Sampling and analysis of volatile organic compounds by sorbent tube / thermaldorption / capillary gas chromatography - Part 16017: Sampling with pump
    • Indoor, ambient and workplace air - Sampling and analysis of volatile compounds through absorbent tube / thermal desorption / capillary gas chromatography - Part 16017: Diffusive sampling
  • Instant gas measurement
    • TS EN ISO 17621 Workplace atmosphere - Detector tube short-term measurement systems - Specification and test methods
