Chemical Exposure Measurement

During the production of a wide variety of substances, from cosmetics to medicines, from cleaning products to paints, very dangerous chemicals are used at different stages. There is always a risk of health problems when using these substances. If these chemicals enter the living organism in appropriate ways and at appropriate doses, they carry a risk of harmful effects. These chemicals can enter the human body in three ways: through the respiratory system, the digestive tract or through skin contact. There is always a risk of short- or long-term exposure to chemicals throughout the working life, in different working environments in different sectors. Although this exposure sometimes occurs as simple skin disorders, it sometimes causes very serious diseases, including cancer.

There are no solutions to eliminate the risks of exposure to chemicals. For example, the substitution of dangerous chemicals may be used. In other words, other substitutes can be used in production. A number of engineering measures and the use of personal protective equipment may also be used.

The Regulation on Health and Safety Measures in Working with Chemicals issued by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security aims to protect employees from hazards arising from or likely to arise from the effects of chemicals used or treated in the workplace and to create a safe working environment.

Not all chemicals are equally dangerous. They do not harm people in the same way, in the same way and in the same time. As long as the chemicals are produced, used and transported safely. In order to control the chemical hazards, it is necessary to know its properties and the hazards it may cause to humans and the environment. For this purpose, it is a necessity for enterprises to make risk assessment. Risk assessment is very important for identifying risks and finding solutions.

What is the Scope of Chemical Exposure Measurement?

At the end of the year, the European Union issued the 2006 / 1907 / EC directive and implemented a new chemicals policy called REACH. The purpose of this directive is to ensure the control of risks caused by chemicals and to provide accurate information about the chemicals produced, taking into consideration human health and environmental protection.

Regulation on Classification, Packaging and Labeling of Dangerous Substances and Preparations has been issued by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization on the basis of European Union Directives 67 / 548 / EEC and 1999 / 45 / EC within the scope of harmonization studies.

Potential risks of chemicals are determined by classification all over the world. These potential risks are grouped into three groups: physico-chemical hazards, toxicological hazards, and environmental and hazards.

According to the Regulation on Health and Safety Measures in Working with Chemicals, enterprises must take precautions to prevent the exposure of employees to dangerous chemicals, to reduce the level of exposure where this is not possible and to protect employees from hazards.

In this context, businesses may go for the substitution of dangerous chemicals as described above. If the substitution method cannot be used due to the characteristics of the work performed, then a risk assessment has to be carried out to one of the following solutions:

  • Considering technological advances, more suitable and suitable processes, engineering control systems or suitable equipment can be used in production.
  • Collective protection measures can be applied to avoid risk at source.
  • Personal protection methods may be applied to employees if the measures taken are insufficient.

In the meantime, there are many national and international standards to take into account when measuring chemical exposure.

our organization TÜRCERT Technical Control and Certification Inc.provides measurement services in accordance with national and international standards and with an impartial approach. In addition, during these activities, TS EN ISO / IEC 17020 General Criteria for the Operation of Various Types of Inspection Organizations complies with the principles.
