OHS Measurements

The term OHS consists of the initials of the term occupational health and safety and refers to all laws and regulations and communiqués and all the studies and practices aimed at protecting the health of the employees.

Along with the rapid developments in industry and technology, the problems related to the health and safety of the people working in the workplaces are growing rapidly. It has become a necessity to take some precautions in advance due to the increase in the problems and serious discomfort, disability and deaths and to make the workplaces safer. Within this framework, the issue of occupational safety has gained seriousness.

In short, a series of measures to be taken in order to create safe working environments in workplaces is called occupational safety. In all professions, it is necessary to keep the health of the employees at the highest level physically, socially and psychologically, to improve working conditions and to make the means of production not harmful to health. Employees should be protected from all harmful effects of the working environment and the harmony between work and employees should be ensured.

Occupational health and safety is a science today. This discipline is concerned with eliminating or reducing health problems and occupational risks that employees are exposed to due to physical conditions in the work environment during the performance of a job. It examines the factors and conditions that affect the health and safety of everyone affected by the operations of an entity, employees, subcontractor employees, temporary workers, customers, visitors, or any person in the workplace.

The basic approach in OHS measurements or occupational health and safety measurements is:

  • To protect employees from the dangers and risks to health that arise from the conduct of a job and to create a more humane working environment
  • First of all to protect the employees, but also to protect the whole business and production safety of the enterprise
  • Ensuring the health and safety of the employees, that is to take necessary precautions against risks such as work accidents and occupational diseases in the workplace

Businesses are obliged to fulfill the above-mentioned conditions and to have the necessary tools and equipment in full. In addition to these responsibilities of the employers, employees are also responsible for complying with the measures taken in the same way and performing their work according to the determined processes.

What is the scope of OHS measurements?

The Ministry of Labor and Social Security issued the Regulation on Health and Safety in the Use of Work Equipment in 2013. According to this regulation, employers are obliged to ensure that the equipment to be used in the workplace is suitable for the work performed and not to harm the health and safety of the employees. In addition, according to the regulations, the tools, machines, facilities and installations used during the works must be tested and inspected by the authorized persons in certain intervals and in accordance with certain methods.

The scope of the measurements to be carried out in accordance with the said regulation is quite wide. For example, the following measurements can be counted: noise exposure measurement, vibration measurement, respirable dust measurement, chemical substance exposure measurement, volatile organic compounds (VOC) measurement, ambient air quality measurement, light intensity measurement, thermal comfort (temperature, humidity, air flow rate) ) measurement, frequency measurements, toxic gas and vapor measurement, hand arm vibration personal exposure measurement, whole body vibration personal exposure measurement and wind speed measurement.
