LPG Storage Tank Control Inspection

In the face of the unpredictable rise in fuel prices, people have begun to show interest in alternative fuels. Among these, LPG is the most striking one. In simple terms, it is a liquefied petroleum gas (consisting of the initials of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, meaning English). LPG is obtained during the distillation of crude oil in refineries or by separation of natural gas above the oil deposits. LPG is an odorless, colorless, heavier than air and flammable gas liquefied under pressure. However, in the event of a leakage, in order to immediately understand the gas leakage, the smell in the refinery is produced during production. The composition of LPG gas used in our country contains 70 butane and 30 propane. When one liter of LPG converts to liquid gas, 250 reaches a volume of gas in liters under normal conditions. Unlike natural gas, LPG is heavier than air. So when there is a leak, it accumulates and collapses down.

LGP is a fuel that consumers can safely use when used in accordance with the conditions of use. In general, LPG provides all the benefits of natural gas. Moreover, because it has a simple chemical structure is considered a more environmentally friendly fuel than other energy sources. LPG emits much less carbon dioxide into the air per unit of energy it produces. Compared to other types of fuel, the heat value is higher and more efficient.

Mainly LPG is used in many fields ranging from industry to housing. Especially used as cylinder gas, autogas and bulk LPG. European Union countries are offering to increase their LPG usage rate from 2020 to 2 percent until 10 as automotive fuel. The market share of LPG as automotive fuel in our country is around 12 percent. In other words, the European Union has exceeded its objectives.

Industrial storage tanks are used to meet this need of enterprises with high fuel consumption or to meet the high fuel demand of tube filling facilities that address a specific region.

For the safe operation of LPG storage tanks, establishment and operation activities must be carried out in accordance with the rules and regular inspections and inspections should be carried out on time.

Control and Inspection Principles of LPG Storage Tanks

In the Regulation on Health and Safety in the Use of Work Equipment issued by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, LPG storage tanks are covered in the article titled pressure vessels and installations. In this context, the standards to be considered for LPG storage tanks are explained as follows:

  • For LPG and similar liquefied gas tanks (aboveground)
    • TS EN 1442 + A1 Tubes for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)
    • TS 1445 Liquefied Petroleum Gases (LPG) - Transport Rules
    • TS 1446 Liquefied petroleum gases (LPG) - Storage rules
    • TS EN 12817 LPG equipment and accessories - Inspection and reassessment of competence
    • TS EN 12819 LPG equipment and accessories - Re-evaluation of examination and competence
  • For LPG and similar liquefied gas tanks (underground)
    • TS EN 12817
    • TS EN 12819
  • TS 2025 Steam boilers operation - General rules of inspection and maintenance
  • For LPG cylinders in use:
    • TS EN 1440 LPG equipment and accessories - Periodic inspection of portable refillable LPG cylinders

For LPG and similar liquefied gas tanks used aboveground or underground, 10 is obliged to have inspection and inspection annually for LPG cylinders in use.

our organization TÜRCERT Technical Control and Certification Inc. provides regular inspection and inspection services for all types of LPG storage tanks. Our organization has a competent manager and employee staff and a strong infrastructure in this field.
