ISO 9001 Quality Management System

Approaches to quality have not emerged in the twentieth century, as we thought. The issue of quality has already existed in some way since ancient times. The following article in the famous Hammurabi Laws of two thousand BC BC is very important: if a construction worker does not do his job properly or because of insufficiency, he will be killed if the house he built is destroyed and causes death. Again in the 1400 BC, officials in Egypt used to check whether the stone blocks used in the construction were upright or not with a wire-made vehicle.

In the thirteenth century, the Apprenticeship and Craftsmen Guilds began to develop and the craftsmen who served there undertook both training and examination duties.

Today, quality control studies in the known sense emerged with the industrial revolution in the nineteenth century. The planning and supervision of the works were taken from the hands of the workers and given to trained officers and engineers. In this way, the first steps of scientific management began to be taken.

In the twentieth century, assembly line production and production activities began to simplify, thus producing high quality products at low cost. With the rapid developments in technology, lack of coordination between units and problems arising from faulty products have started to attract attention and separate units have been established to perform quality control procedures.

It was thanks to Deming that quality assurance was first used and the concept of quality spread all over the world. In those years, Japanese quality proved its superiority all over the world. Since 1980 years, quality has started to cover all the activities of the organizations. Organizations are now focusing not only on production activities but also on the whole system.

What is Total Quality Management Concept

The concept of quality has a wide scope. Therefore, it is very difficult to define quality. All experts have made a quality definition in line with their own assessment and approach. According to the International Standards Organization, quality is the sum of the characteristics of products or services that are based on the ability to meet the needs identified or to arise in the future. According to the American Society for Quality Control, quality is a set of characteristics that demonstrate the ability of products or services to meet a specific requirement. According to the European Quality Control Organization, quality is the degree of conformity of products or services to the demands of consumers.

The common point of all these definitions is to anticipate customer demands, go beyond customer expectations and create customer satisfaction.

The main purpose of the Quality Management System is to ensure quality at every stage from the first step of the production activities, from the procurement of raw materials to the transportation, storage, storage, transportation and delivery of the finished product. In short, this system aims to spread the quality understanding to the whole organization and to reach excellence in every step.

What are the main features of ISO 9001 Quality Management System

Total Quality Management is a system approach. In this respect, it looks at the activities of the enterprise as a whole. Theoretically, the fact that each individual part of a system is perfect does not indicate that the system is good. The important thing is that each part is compatible with each other. Only then can we speak of a successful system.

The Quality Management System focuses on the quality of products and services and requires the participation of all employees from the lowest to the highest level. In the long run it is mainly to satisfy customers. In this regard, senior managers should be able to enter the work effectively and continuously.

The main features of Total Quality Management can be listed as follows:

  • To be customer oriented. In the traditional management approach, the opinions and decisions of the top management are essential and companies are managed in a hierarchical structure that goes down the hill. In this case, it is important for subordinates to please a superior. However, the aim of Quality Management System is to manage the company in line with customer demands, to create customer satisfaction by meeting customer expectations and to satisfy customers by exceeding customer expectations.
  • To cooperate with suppliers. Collaboration with suppliers based on mutual trust is an important factor that will increase the competitiveness of the company.
  • To train and ensure the participation of employees. Employees should understand the values of the company and create a corporate culture based on trust and empowerment within the company. Involvement of employees who do the work themselves is very important for the improvement and development of business processes. Opportunities for learning and skills development should also be created to increase participation and communication.
  • Manage with processes and data. Business processes should be prepared for all activities of the company, work flow charts should be prepared, application instructions should be documented and the job descriptions, powers and responsibilities of the employees should be determined. In the Quality Management System, all activities are managed systematically through processes. Processes should be understood and implemented by all employees. Improvement activities to prevent mistakes and measurement and statistical methods are important tools for employees to use in daily life. Data, measurement and statistical values play an important role in the Quality Management System.
  • Being open to continuous development and creativity. Today, continuous improvement of Quality Management System is the most important factor for companies to have high competitiveness. The aim of the system approach is not to achieve a certain standard. The goal here is to develop at a constant and rapid pace regardless of the targeted level. All ideas within the company should be supported and the creativity of the employees should be emphasized.
  • To ensure consistency of leadership and purpose. Leaders play an important role in the development of corporate culture. At all levels of management activities, it is important that people in the leadership position exhibit leadership behaviors. The company's management policies and strategies should be disseminated throughout the organization through systematic and structural means.
  • To have social responsibility. Managers and employees of the company should take a moral approach and be responsible for staying within the boundaries of the instructions and existing legal regulations implemented within the company and not to go beyond this.
  • Seeking results. Continuous success in the Quality Management System depends on the satisfaction of stakeholders and the balancing of interests. The term daş stakeholders burada encompasses the whole society as well as customers, suppliers, employees and shareholders who benefit from the company.

What is ISO 9001 Quality Management System

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO for short) was established in 1947 to set international standards for products and services. This organization published ISO 1987 Quality System Standards in 9000. These standards are a collection of standards that guide the establishment and development of the quality system to be established by companies in order to create customer satisfaction. The ISO 9000 series of standards includes four basic standards:

·         ISO 9000: 2015 Quality Management Systems, Basics, Terms and Definitions.

This standard describes the basic principles of the Quality Management System.

·         ISO 9001: 2015 Quality Management Systems, Requirements

This standard specifies the requirements of the Quality Management System that a company must implement to prove that it has the capacity to produce in accordance with customer demands and expectations.

·         ISO 9004: 2010 Quality Management Systems, Guidelines for Performance Improvements

This standard is aimed at improving the performance of the company and ensuring the satisfaction of its customers.

·         TS EN ISO 19011: 2012 Quality and Environmental Management Systems Audit Manual

ISO 9001 Quality Management System, since the date of publication has become an international standard that attracts a lot of attention from companies from all sectors. The International Standards Organization reviews the standards in order to maintain the applicability of these standards in general, every five years, to regulate the points that require change or to remove the required points from the implementation. In this way, after the updates made in 1994, 2000 and 2008, a new update was made last year.

In short, ISO 9000 standards are a quality assurance model for establishing a Quality Management System in companies and evaluating the installed system. These standards have been published in our country by Turkish Standards Institute as TS EN ISO 9000 standards. These standards show the minimum requirements for establishing and managing an effective Quality Management System in companies.

ISO 9001: What the 2015 Standard Brings

The ISO 9001 Quality Management System standard was last updated in 2008. The International Standards Organization has made extensive changes to the standard last year. The studies commenced by the Technical Committee from 2012 in November were completed in 2015 and the latest version of the ISO 9001: 2015 standard was published in 2015 in September. The standards of management systems to be developed will be compatible with each other in parallel with this new regulation. All other management system standards will have the same section headings and definitions. Below is the comparative version of the standard structure before the revision:

In this way, the ISO 9001: 2015 Quality Management System standard will be more easily implemented by companies operating in the service sector.

In addition, the revised standard highlights the following:

·         In order for companies to identify important problems and requirements during the planning and development stages of the Quality Management System, two sub-clauses have been added to the standard regarding the content of the organization: understanding the organization and structure, and understanding the needs and expectations of interested parties.

·         The Stakeholder Relationship Management article serves to balance the relations of the company with its business partners and organizations, ie consumers, supplier companies, retailers, business owners, employees in the company, bankers and competitors.

·         The previous version of the standard was based on improving, improving and implementing the effectiveness of the system. In this new structure, the development of systems and processes are discussed together.

·         In the new structure of the standard, the scope of management evaluation has been extended and the company's strategic direction, the opinions of the related parties and strategic and risk and opportunity evaluation have been introduced.

ISO 9001 Quality Management System Certificate

Companies that meet and apply the requirements of the ISO 9001 standard may apply for a ISO 9001 Certificate by applying to a certification body. Companies with this certificate prove that the products and services they produce and offer to their customers are produced in compliance with an internationally accepted standard.

ISO 9001 Quality Management System Certificate is issued and delivered to the company if it is seen that the company meets and fulfills the necessary conditions at the end of the audit studies to be performed by the certification body. It is important that the certification body is accredited from a national or international accreditation body for the validity and acceptance of this certificate.

The fact that a company applies the ISO 9001 standard, first and foremost, shows that the company's quality concept is established. Compliance with these standards increases the company's profitability, productivity and market share, decreases costs, creates effective management in the company and increases employee motivation. More importantly, customer complaints are reduced, product returns are reduced and customer satisfaction rises.
